About a Kilimanjaro
KILIMANJARO is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain known to man. It is a mountain where you can hike for more than 90 kilometers, gain 4 000 meters in altitude, traverse rain forest, moorland, alpine desert, snow fields and ice cliffs, all virtually on the equator! Just once for a lifetime, a truly adventure and fascination.
Kilimanjaro national park was established in 1973 and covers an area of 756 sq km. The altitude rises from 1,720m at the Marangu Gate to 5,895m at the top of Kibo Peak. The mountain has 3 peaks namely Shira to the east, Mawenzi to the west and Kibo (the tallest) in the middle of the other two.
Kilimanjaro National Park covers the area above 2700m on the mountain and is located a mere 3 degrees (approximately 340km) south of the equator. Its vegetation varies from montane rain forest, to heath and moorland to highland/alphine desert presenting a symphony of awesome landscapes and scenery.
Climbing to Uhuru peak, the highest point is a non-technical hike which can be done by any average adventurer. There are different routes used to ascend to the roof of Africa including Marangu, Machame, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe. Wildlife present includes elephant, buffalo, serval cat, eland, bushbuck, duiker, hyrax, bush pig, collobus, baboon, blue monkeys, and a variety of birds.
Although it can be climbed anytime of the year, the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is in the cool, dry months of
June-October, or the hotter, dry months from December-March. It is advisable to avoid the rainy months of April, May and November.
